  • Lemur Studio's Footwear Landmine Detection Concept

    February 24, 2014 1 min read

Land mines have long been a severe problem in areas that have experienced conflict. The problem being that once war is over nobody goes back to remove them.

With an estimated 110 million mines believed to be active worldwide this is not a small problem.  Protecting the people who live in these areas takes huge resources in order to locate and deactivate mines. Even when efforts are made there is still a risk of mines going unfound.

Lemur studio in Columbia have created this retrofittable land mine detection solution that fits inside a shoe. The system works by fitting a metal detector with a planar coil sensor in the insole. This then sends alerts to a wristband to warn the user of nearby mines.

The main proposition is that anyone can become a detection system in areas affected. The more people wearing the system the quicker mines can be eradicated. The data from the insoles can also be collected and correlated in order to see where more mines may be located.

The idea is still in a conceptual stage with Lemur Studio perfecting the design. So fingers crossed this can become a reality.
